How Organizing My Office Helped Me Rediscover Joy - with a Create Room DreamBox

Does Joy Need a Warning?

A few years ago, one of my neighbors told me that one of her favorite things to do was clean out her family’s junk drawer.

It really got me thinking.

Maybe I am more in a fight when I'm cleaning and decluttering my house, fighting overwhelm, restless energy, anger, and feeling out of control."

I love a decluttered, everything-has-a-place-and-is-in-it kind of house, but it has always felt like an outright fight to obtain and maintain that state in my house. I have a dog, a creative kid, I am creative, and we are a decently busy family. But her thinking was starting to make sense to me. Though, "favorite thing to do" is not how I’d describe my feelings about it.

When life feels overwhelming—tidying helps me feel grounded.
When I have restless energy—putting things in their place helps me focus.
When I’m mad—deep cleaning releases that anger.
When things feel out of control—clearing out things we don’t need any longer feels safe.

The Office Deep Clean

Six months ago, I took on my entire office. My office space had been making me feel stuck. I needed to make decisions related to Finch & Fern, and the chaos, clutter, and dust were adding to my lack of mental and emotional ability to decide. So, everything was scrutinized.

Now, for context, my office is my creative space, our family’s paperwork headquarters, my office when I work from home, and where I do many of my personal projects. So, saying the room is multifunctional is an understatement. But I needed it to feel more protected, organized, supportive, and FUN!

I was ruthless. Paperwork was sorted, shredded, filed, and out of sight. Sentimental items were dusted, intentional, and brought true joy. Anything in view needed to give instant love, happiness, and spur creativity. And then it dawned on me….I needed a new furniture solution. I got sidetracked for the next two hours evaluating and weighing the pros and cons of an expensive, but incredible, piece of furniture I’d been dreaming of for YEARS.

Yes, the DreamBox.

Have you seen this wildly impressive thing? The lighting, the storage, the workspace, and the multifunctional aspects are top-notch. Did I need it? Did I deserve it? Was it way too bougie?

Yes. Yes. Yes.

I ordered it that day and waited the three weeks for the 18-wheeler-delivered-on-a-pallet Box of Dreams! It was HUGE. I won’t bore you with the process of putting it together, but I do want to say the unboxing was memorable. It came with a warning:

Contains Massive Joy!

The DreamBox mostly open and partially filled with all the craft things

I’ve had it for months now, and I’m still filling it, moving things around, and making it work perfectly for my needs. The warning was so true. My DreamBox contains massive joy. When I open it, turn on those crown lights, and pull out my well-organized tools and supplies, it brings joy because everything has a place, and it is in its place! No stressing because things fall out of my old organizer or because I just can’t find something. And when I need to put it all away, I can, and the doors close.

Getting the DreamBox was less of a response to a stuck feeling and more of a commitment to believe in myself and what is in store for Finch & Fern, for right now and into the future.
